Overview

During my internship at Onepoint, I was commissioned to create a mobile game which was presented during the Devfest. I was taking charge of the user interface design. Since the theme of this year’s event was urban, I illustrated the skater, hacker, parkour as main characters and decided that the game would take place at some famous spots of Nantes. Also, it was necessary to communicate frequently with the product owner and our developers as well as taking part in several usability tests. Thanks to the efforts of every team member, the game had a great success, and we received many positives feedbacks during the event.

Concept

I joined the team in july when the product owner introduced the concept of the game to me: 5 urban heroes( 5 players) meet in different places of Nantes with the objective of mastering them and to keep going with theirs adventure. It is necessery to cooperate with other players in order to accumulate the points of mastery.

For each turn, we play one card out of the four offered in our ten-card deck. The players have to compose between different types of cards according to theirs character, also they have to cosiderate the situation of the team and the effect that the place would take place.

Then the system will calculate the effect of players as well as the place. As long as that last one is not mastered and the team is still alive, The game will keep going to next round.

My role

Once I understood the concept, I started wireframing with the given wireframe.

Also, I was doing the graphic research for the creation of the universe.

Then I tried different styles for the graphic as I was tasked to illustrate 5 characters and 7 spots of Nantes. After several modification, we finally fixed the illustration.

Concerning about the design interface, I was struggling at the beginning, It was not easy to agree with everyone in the team for the choice of colors and the typography. Thankfully, we had a designer community inside of the compagne, where is was easy to get advices and help.

After many usability tests, I adjusted the details with the team together and we added some indications(messages) to enhance the user experience.

Logo

Proposition of the logo “Steert riders”, I also designed the favicon, in the shape of a spaypaint, by keeping the coherence of the logo devfest, the one already designed by another designer.

Organisation

We were a team of 7 including 2 product owner, 1 front-end developer, 3 back-end developers and 1 designer. We had weekly reunions each monday during which we communicate our advancement. We used the methode agile for the organisation. Trello was a tool we used to record our task and to-do list, also we used Microsoft Teams, application where we exchange the most frequent. Everyone was proactive and ready to listen to each other, Although there was the pressure when we were getting close to the coming event, we managed to deliver the project on time thanks to the great organisation.

During the event

Some souvenirs from Devfest 2021. Many people stopped by the stand and tested for the game, also we distributed some goodies during the event.

Conclusion

It was a fruitful experience from which I learnt to pratice the methode agile in a real project. I found the importance of being proactive and being well organised within a team. Also being assigned to a very specific role was interesting as it lead me to improve my communication skills with other teammates.

Finally I want to thanks Sylvain, Paul, Charline, Nicolas, Thibault and Rémi for being such a formidable team!
